About

We are Maria Pugliese and Laura Alonso and we met seven years ago living in Buenos Aires. We are girls in love with adventure, travel and challenges. We love having too much on our plate (this can include food), multi-tasking, drinking Malbec, topics to discuss, therapy through whatsapp and sharing the highs and lows of life.

And we love to run. We don’t love it in the freaky sense, but we do love it.

We ran our first marathon together in Buenos Aires in 2009. Since then Maria has run two more, Laura has run the RunRampage and recovered from a fractured tibia and in February 2012 we both ran the Cruce de los Andes from Chile to Argentina together. We are the M&M Running Club and this is our story and how running features in our lives, adventures and travels and, of course, our friendship.

Get involved: write comments, share tips and give us your running inspiration.

  1. Dear Laura and Maria,

So proud of you both for conquering El Cruce. I plan to run this year to raise funds for charity and would love some advice. Wondering what the medical document they require is and what kind of equipment is needed as I’m having trouble with the website. Any advice at all would be so helpful!

Take care and have a wonderful holiday!

    • Hi Mindy,
BIG APOLOGIES for not getting back to you sooner. Both Maria and I have been travelling and just got back this last week, so now have time to catch up on stuff.
Thanks for getting in touch about Cruce! We are so jealous you’re doing it this year! We’ve just been chatting and trying to work out the logistics of our next adventure!
Anyway, you need to take a fit note from your doctor. Doesn’t matter if it’s in English. Also, they make you do a heart stress test. This is where they hook you up and put you on a tread mill, increasing the speed and inclination every couple of minutes. It’s not a fitness test, they are just testing your heart. Maria got hers done on her health insurance in Argentina at the time. I had to pay privately in London.
In terms of equipment, I am assuming they’re doing the same as last year: e.g. you don’t need tents. But you will need a sleeping mat, sleeping bag, waterproofs, water bottle/s, torch (head torch best kind). I also recommend some plastic bags for if times and clothes get wet, a watch with an alarm, lots of safety pins, lots of socks, blister plasters, insect cream and repellent, sunblock, a travel towel. Also, a pillowcase which you can shove clothes into make a pillow. You’re probably staying one night in San Martin de los Andes before the off, right? Most hostels/hotels are prepared and will let you leave stuff while you go and do Cruce for those 3/4 days. You’re also going to need cutlery. Last year they gave us a cup for hot drinks and a wooden plate board thing and bowl.
What else? I hope this helps for now. If you need anything else, let me know!
      Mucha suerte!
      Laura

Thank you so very much for getting back with me and the information! I am not able to find a physician in the U.S. to do the exercise EKG required, even with medical insurance. Is this an easier task in S. America (i.e. Chile)? I desperately want to do this race and this last step is my only hurdle. I must also mention that my partner decided not to run, thus I will run solo. I am more than a little nervous. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much and Mucho Aloha! Mindy
